- Yes, my 2000 boots in about 15 seconds too. Of course, it doesn't load
- extensions to use virtual memory, Quicktime, etc. I guess you bought second
- hand hardware as well as me? :)
-
- My Mac emulator boots in about 10 seconds, which indicates to me that your
- PowerMacs at work are very badly configured. Don't blame everything on
- machines you use at work - I have *never* found a computer in a business
- environment working anywhere *near* its capacity. Generally all the defaults
- are left on, so the machine loads heaps of stuff it doesn't need, and the
- drive is left to fragment for about 5 years... :)

-
- I assume the PowerMac is running emulated 680x0 code then. PowerPC chips are
- *far* faster than any 680x0 chip, and if you ran native software, you would
- realise this.
-
- You do understand, of course, that by bagging the speed of the PowerMac you
- are condemning your Amiga as well! I personally am greatly looking forward to
- the PowerPC chip - I think it will be a very exciting advance. The downside
- is, of course, that we will have people like you judging a machine at face
- value and not taking the time or effort to try and understand the machine and
- work out how to make it work more efficiently.

-
- Hmm. I never mentioned video speed on Macs. I was merely commenting that AGA
- doesn't compare with PC or Mac video hardware. I haven't used PowerMacs yet,
- but I know their third party graphics accelerators have 3D hardware on them
- these days and really fly. PowerMac 7500s can happily digitise 320x240 pixel
- frames at 20fps, which grabbing CD quality audio on the fly, standard.
-
- Your Z3 Spectrum is not standard Amiga hardware, nor is it particularly
- affordable compared to the PC equivalent.

-
- They obviously need more than the 2Mb VRAM they were supplied with. Look to
- your bosses who must have been stingy. Then again, if 1600x1200 is not
- required for your work, then why spend the extra? Macs can accept up to 4Mb
- VRAM, as I recall, like Amigas, but faster, as we must use DRAM until the
- Cybervision Pro comes out (quite shortly, as I understand it!).

-
- That's because it's reloading the Finder, surely?
-
- I don't see what that has to do with video speed...
-
- >Have I mentioned screens? Wait, that must be just some incredible
- >outdated feature of our chipsets -- the crowded screens on the Mac are
- >much nicers..
-
- That is something I really dislike about the Mac.
-
- Then again, the PowerMac 7500 has a 1Gb HD as standard, a 10Mb/sec SCSI bus,
- built-in PCI, standard Ethernet, composite and S-Video input...
-
- They're nice systems. If the PowerAmiga fails (and I hope it won't) I'll be
- considering one. Of course, even the Mac is doing badly these days.
-
- >Let's be honest; you're an idiot if you're going to compare your
- >9-year-old Amiga 2000 to a PowerMac and then conclude that ALL Amigas are
- >slow. There's a reason I use my 3KT instead of my 100MHz PC or the 7500s
-
- I was comparing *all* Amigas to *all* other comparably priced machines. A
- 4000 does 19 MIPS. That's extremely slow, and my 9 year old 2000 does a fair
- amount faster.. :)
-
- Of course, so will a Pentium at half the price, and a Mac, somewhere in
- between the Amiga and Pentium in price I suppose.. :)
-
- >(w/ 32 and 64 Mo's of RAM, incidentally) -- and it's not because it's
- >'slower' or has crappy graphics, but just the opposite.
-
- I use my Amiga because the OS rocks - that's the *only* reason. If I could
- run Amiga OS on a Pentium with no compromises, I'd do it. You'd be mad not
- to.
-
- Oh, incidentally, check that your PowerMacs have Virtual Memory turned on,
- with just 1Mb of cache size. For some reason, they run a *lot* faster with
- that little trick.
-
- I eagerly await your cries of 'idiot', and 'PC/Mac lover'. I tend to get
- those a fair amount these days.. :)
-
- Fact is, I'm an Amiga fan, just pointing out facts, which certain rabid folk
- seem eager to argue against. My facts are just that, facts. They're
- verifiable. When I say a PowerMac is faster, be sure that benchmarks prove
- it. Whether it's more *useable* is a completely different story.
-
- Now ask yourself why I'm still using an Amiga, and question whether I really
- love Macs and PCs before you start trying to flame me again.
